New Testimonium Interface

25 Sep 2007   posted by: Ben C. Smith   tags: mini synoptic, early christianity, website links

I have always been interested in the purported testimony of Josephus to Jesus Christ in Antiquities of the Jews 18.3.3 §63-64, also known as the Testimonium Flavianum. Not long ago Stephen Carlson (of Hypotyposeis fame, and whom I had the very good fortune to finally meet in person at Duke University recently) emailed me a collection of Greek witnesses to the Testimonium; some of these Greek texts I already had, but most I did not, though I was aware of many.

To that core collection I have just added quite a few other ancient and medieval witnesses to the Testimonium, along with my own translation of each text (provided the original is in Greek or Latin), on my analytic text page dealing with this controversial Josephan passage. The section on indirect attestation contains the Testimonium itself proper along with four other texts that may or may not be related to it. It is the section on direct attestation that contains the many witnesses to the Josephan passage.

Furthermore, I have added an interface that allows one to compare and contrast any two of these witnesses in simple tabular format.

I may add other witnesses as their texts become available to me.

Ah, what about the Syriac witnesses?
