Humorous Musings

Excellent jewels from the blogdom. First, there’s a book - The BaLoney Code - and from the product review alone, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter. As soon as I get moved in and settled down, I think I’ll have to buy this book.
Also, Glaukopis points me to this hilarious GetFuzzy cartoon:

Enjoy!

Infinity in Archimedes

Apparently in the only surviving copy of Archimedes’ The Method of Mechanical Theorems, a palimpsest nonetheless, a large proof dealing with infinity has been found in a previously unread section of the work.
“It has always been thought that modern mathematicians were the first to be able to handle infinitely large sets, and that this was […]

Updates on Vacation

Sorry about another long delay, both at the forum and weblog - I’m vacationing with my fiancée in the mountains. The hotel has internet, but there’s so little time for it! Just wanted to mention a couple of things.
First, did anyone else catch The Colbert Report last night? Stephen Colbert featured Bart Ehrman as his […]

Lucretius is an odd character. We know virtually nothing of his […]

Ac ne forte roges, quo me duce, quo Lare tuter,
nullius addictus iurare in verba magistri,
quo me cumque rapit tempestas, deferor hospes.
Nunc agilis fio et mersor civilibus undis,
virtutis verae custos rigidusque satelles;
nunc in Aristippi furtim praecepta relabor,
et mihi res, non me rebus, subiungere conor.
Q. Horatius Flaccus, Epistulae, Liber I, primus epistula, ab xiii ad xix.

My intent is to let you know what is going on in areas related to the New Testament, especially Jesus and the origins of Christianity. There is so much happening so fast that keeping up is hard to […]

Oldest Book I Own

Chris Tilling begins the meme of the oldest book you own. His is from 1835 - A Brief Historical Account of the Most Eminent Scots Worthies, Noblemen, Gentlemen, Ministers, and Others, Who Testified or Suffered for the Reformation in Scotland, During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century.
I have two older than that. The oldest book […]

Elitism, Dilettantism, and Hypocrisy

What started as something rather trivial - a particularly negative review of Jim Tabor’s Jesus Dynasty by now remorseful Michael Turton - has exploded again into controversy. Jim West began the debate criticizing Michael Turton, though he refused to mention either name or blog of the reviewer, nor did he even make a valid attempt […]
